November 13, 2011

*Warning.....this post has a lot of words, all so I can remember the details.
This is the reason I will always remember Kyle's 9th birthday....

Kyle wanted mashed potatoes for his birthday.....so of course roast went with that. So I put a nice sized, frozen roast in at about 300 degrees and left for church. I came home to smoke alarms blaring, and a house FULL of smoke.
This is what was left of the roast.....which was big and frozen when we left 3 1/2 hours before.
You can't see it very well, but the inside of the oven was BLACK, and melted in a few places.
We are not sure what happened, but it appears to us the stove malfunctioned. I know we were very very blessed to not have it start on fire. I had stayed after church to get my Temple recommend renewed and at first I was irritated that I did, thinking 15 minutes could have prevented this......then I saw the roast and I KNEW that it's a really good thing that I did, or there was a good chance I wouldn't have a house now! We were watched over this day.
I told the kids to stay outside while I ran in and saw that the whole house wasn't on fire, it was just the oven. Phew! I shut the oven off, then opened all the windows and doors. Smoke was billowing out everywhere. The kids had gone over to Grandma's....who had stayed home from church because she didn't feel well. She came and saw smoke coming from out of the windows, I'm sure it was a scary sight.
Since the roast was gone, the house was WAY stinky, we took our birthday festivities over to Grandma Susy's house and had waffles. We had to take some of the balloons...it was a birthday still! We all stunk, but the balloons really held the smell. We spent most of the day there, we did sleep at our house that night. The downstairs- especially the bedrooms weren't too bad, but upstairs was nice and smelly.
We called the insurance the next day and we are able to get some help from them. Because it was the stoves fault, they will not pay to replace it. Had it been my fault they would have. I keep telling myself.....at least I have a stove. They are paying for a lot of other things though. They put an ozone machine...which sucks all the oxygen, smoke, mold, all the bad stuff out of the air. We couldn't be in the house while that machine was working. We had to get a new microwave- the other one was WAY stinky. We have washed inside and out of all the cupboards and walls in the whole living area, and the little room behind the stove where all our coats are. The cabinets around the microwave still smelled really strong so he took them down and he's going to try to get the smell out. If the cabinets come out of it a different color, then they will replace the whole kitchen! We have repainted the ceiling, the kitchen walls and where the coats are. We may still have to repaint the whole living area. The great thing is they will pay us to do the work!! A wonderful way to pay for a new stove and insurance deductible!
This is what it was like for a couple weeks
Now my baking center is moved to here!
Because.......we finally got the new stove! My Brother-in-law could get us a really good price on a stove, so we ordered one through him. It was suppose to come Dec. 2nd, and they called the day before saying it was on back order until the 13th!! I was so happy it came in on the 9th, although it was in Logan and my Parents brought it out to us on the 11th when Christopher got ordained a Deacon. Being without a stove was hard, but not as hard as I thought. We ate pretty simple. Crock pots are great. Skillets are wonderful. Dutch ovens and grills are the best. I think what I missed the most was a stove top. I decided to upgrade to a double oven stove and I'm so excited about it. The first thing I made was cupcakes for Heidi's birthday and it was fast!

This is what our kitchen will look like for at least a few more weeks I'm sure. Until they get the cabinets figured out.
My Wonderful hubby painted the whole ceiling!! We had to prime it with special stuff that masks the smell, then repaint over it! He is the BEST! I found out from the restoration guy that very few husbands help with any restoration stuff. I was very surprised because Darin has helped me so much and I know his Dad, his brothers, my Dad and brothers would all do the same thing. We are a team and we work together.

It has been an adventure, and we still aren't done. I am just SOO grateful to have a home. I can't imagine having a house fire and having nothing. I'm so grateful that Heavenly Father was watching over and protecting our home this day!

So if you want some meat smoked......come on over, I'm pretty good at it!

Ha I liked Darcy's comment! I didn't realize that you were still cleaning, panting, and waiting for cabinets. I hope it all gets taken care of soon!! Your new stove looks nice!

Wow, Tayna! How scary! I am so glad it wasn't worse than it was. My friend here in Farmington had a very similar experience just a few weeks ago. I am glad the repairs are going well, it can be a lot of work and headache. :)

Maybe we need to come see your new oven. ;)

Glad you are all ok. I was wondering what had happened since I read your post about the birthday. Good luck getting all the repairs taken care of.

Wow, Tayn! What an adventure. So glad things are turning out Ok and that it wasn't any worse. I have some friends who did loose everything in a house fire. Glad you didn't have to go through that.
